Chapter Fourteen

The woman’s blush was appealing to him in some inexplicable way. It shouldn’t be so. Ellis was certain there was a very scientific explanation for the blood pooling in her cheekbones. But the way it warmed her face, and with her eyes downcast in a bashful manner, it just did something to Ellis’ chest that was unlikely to be healthful but it was vastly appealing.

And he really did want to know what she was worrying about. Perhaps he could be of assistance.

“I haven’t any secrets, my lord,” she finally told him in her quiet but firm voice. That same voice that somehow sent shivers on his neck for no reason that carried any logic behind it.

“Isn’t it, by definition, a secret if you aren’t going to tell me?”

That question surprised a laugh out of her, and he was inordinately pleased by the accomplishment.

“Why would you care what my worries are, in any case?” she asked, her frown returning.

“Every gentleman has as his goal to solve the worries of all fair maidens,” Ellis said, bowing with a flourish that brought her back to laughter.

“You are a jester, I see,” she said, still not telling him why she had been frowning.

Ellis grew serious. “My dear girl, are you well? Can I not do aught for you? I swear it to you, I’m not a paltry fellow. I could actually assist you with most things.”

Adriana’s small breath would have been merely breathing on someone else, but Ellis suspected that from her it was a sigh of defeat. He was both heartened and saddened by his accomplishment. He had no wish to defeat the woman.

“I do have worries, doesn’t everyone?”

“I would suspect, under the current odd circumstances, yours might be a little more complicated than others.”

She nodded in agreement, and Ellis was glad he had persisted. It was as he thought. The poor dear had taken on too much.

“I am just afraid of what shall become of me. It is likely my position with Lady Evangeline is to be very short. And Miss Bastion shan’t need me past her wedding day. So, while I am busier than ever at this moment, it could all come to an end within a se’en-night or maybe a fort-night.”

Ellis hoped so, for her sake, but it didn’t seem as though she were looking forward to being free of obligations.

“Why aren’t you relieved?” he asked with a frown.

“Because I need to be employed. And uncertainty gives me hives.”

Ellis was surprised into a guffaw of laughter. “Hives, is it?”

She had managed not to even crack a smile over her jest, an impressive feat.

“How can I help?” Ellis finally said and was relieved by the expression of gratification that spread over her features. She wasn’t offended by his nosiness, but rather seemed to appreciate his inquiry.

“Do you know anyone in need of a companion?” She knew her tone held sarcasm but really, why was the gentleman even asking. She didn’t expect an answer from him. She was just a worrier by nature, it couldn’t be helped.
